1960's Toys

The 1950s brought with it some famous toys, the Frisbee, the hula hoop, and silly putty just to name a few. But could the toys from the 1960's top the accomplishments of the 1950s? Let's have a look at some of the most famous 1960's toys:

Hot Wheels - The husband of the Barbie doll inventor, Elliot Handler invented Hot Wheels whist doing some experimentation. It's funny how the most famous toys are discovered by accident. In the first year of release, Hot Wheels sold more than ten times more than what was expected making it to this day, one of the most well sold toys ever produced. The car's ability to conduct tricks was one of the main reasons why it was so successful.

LEGO - The famous Lego brand and toy was invented in this decade. Lego has been one of the most popular toys ever and is still played with by countless millions of children around the world today - One of the most famous of 1960's toys.

G.I Joe - The history or should I say, the beginnings of G.I Joe are not well understood with certain myths floating around as to how the toy was created. But regardless of that, G.I Joe was the first toy to be ever called an "action figurine".

Easy Bake Oven - One of the most famous toys associated and marketed to young girls, the easy bake oven was the first toy oven ever produced. It was manufactured by Kenner Products or now more commonly known as Hasbro. In the first year of sales, more than half a million easy bake ovens were sold making it one of the most well sold toys in its first year.

As you can see, 1960's toys are probably even more famous than those manufactured in the previous decade.

Toy Ideas for Children with Cerebral Palsy and Special Needs

One of the more common problems with mainstream toys is that they are meant to be used with two hands- often times children with cerebral palsy will have limited use of one side of the body or the use of only one hand.

Toys should be fun and children should have a feeling of accomplishment or success when playing- not frustrated or reminded of what they cannot do.

Many of the commercial toys on the market can be adapted or used by children with cerebral palsy.

There are many toys that you can buy at any toy store or department store that are affordable and fun to use. Look for toys that can be used with one hand.
Musical instruments are great for this- a trumpet, harmonica, xylophone or maracas. These also develop a sense of cause and effect with young children and help controlled movement with older children.

Magnetic type toys are all the rage and a big hit with kids of all ages- there are tons of magnetic toys available in many forms- magnetic jig saw puzzles, magnetic construction toys and magnetic marbles.

A simple ball is a lot of fun and great for developing coordination- get a neat ball that glows in the dark, flashes lights or play music when you roll it.

Toys or play that involve the senses will help with sensory integration development.
Sand and water are great for this. You can also fill a empty dish pan with uncooked rice- a great makeshift sand box for a rainy day.
A tip to avoid sand box mess: put the sandbox on cement blocks- will be at waist level and kids won't get sand in all their clothes.

Toys that help with coordination and controlled movement are also a good choice.
Bowls filled with beads, beans or jelly beans are good for sorting, counting and grouping. Excellent for controlled movement.
Building blocks- simple wooden blocks, large dominoes for stacking also help with controlled movement. Also try empty milk cartons for stacking.

Play-doh is always a favorite- make your own play-doh and use Kool-Aid to not only color it but give it a fruity scent. Your child will be developing sensory awareness and visual motor integration skills as he plays.

Keep a box around filled with wheeled toys. Toy trucks and cars of all sizes. These deal with non-verbal expression, problem solving and self-control.

Keep toys in site so your child can see what available- avoid opaque containers and lids. Baskets are great for this.

You can find many toys in local stores and make your own from even around your house without having to spend a lot of money on adaptive or special needs toys. Mainstream toys help with developmental skills such as cognitive awareness, controlled movement and coordination- and don't forget they are fun!

History of Plush Toys

Plush toys have been around for a very long time. They can be stuffed with all sorts of things including plastic pellets, straw, beans, cotton, synthetic fibers, and other similar things. Mostly, they were designed to bring comfort to young children, but many adults like them, too. Many early stuffed animals were actual animal skins, much like would be used in taxidermy. Material is used now, however, and there are different types of materials used, depending on the feel that the company is going for. Most modern stuffed animals are called stuffed toys, soft toys, or plush toys - and sometimes plushies. The Steiff Company, founded in 1880 in Germany, was the first commercial maker of the stuffed toy. Teddy Bears are among the most common toys produced, with sock monkeys running a close second.

Depending on what a person likes, though, there are all types of different animals that can be popular as plush toys. Some of the plush toys created today look much more realistic than others, and a few of them are not designed to be animals at all. Almost anything can be created in the shape and style of a plush toy, so the only limitation is the imagination of the person creating the toys. Plush toys are wildly popular in many countries and the enjoyment of them by young, and old alike, continues to grow. As more designs and new materials come about, there is no telling how far plushies will go and how many new and different animals and other shapes will come about.

While the German company that first started making them commercially goes back a long way, the original stuffed animals go back even further. They were made by hand for children in the household as far back as 1830 or so. Dolls were popular then, with buttons for eyes. Bits and scraps of material could be used to make them and to give them 'clothing' to wear. Moms who mended clothes, sheets and curtains were good at sewing, and they were able to create the predecessors to plush toys for their children and grandchildren, making the hard lives that these people often lived just a little bit easier. Having a comfort object was important then. There were no nightlights or streetlights for many of these people, and a stuffed doll could go a long way toward making a child feel safe in the dark.

Your Kids Will Love Mechanical Retro Toys

Don't you get nervous when your kid prefers to play video games for hours instead of playing outside, reading books or doing something creative? You are not alone - the children nowadays spend too much time in front of a monitor or a TV set and play too much games with violence that don't help them develop their imagination.

I have an idea for you. Your kids will love it. You will love it. I'm afraid you may even get addicted to playing with the kids. Introduce them to some mechanical retro toys - like the ones from your childhood. You'll be surprised to see how much kids enjoy them!

Mechanical toys are affordable, long living, usually eco-friendly and help the kids develop their curiosity, creativity and imagination. Some of them have very simple mechanisms which can be seen, explored and reproduced. You can even make mechanical retro toys yourself or with your kids.

Just see the main categories of mechanical toys you can play with:

Wind-Up Toys
These toys are powered by a spring inside. You get a key, wind up the toy and then it can move for several minutes. The wind-up toys are within the most charming mechanical toys. They can be powered by rather complex gears and can perform a big variety of movements.

Usually wind-up toys are made of tin, but nowadays you'll find more plastic toys - they are cheaper and lighter but usually can't live as long as the good old tin toys.

Cam and crank toys
A simpler way to power a mechanical toy is to transmit the kinetic energy from your hand directly to the toy. Such toys use cams attached to a crank and follower. The crank is not centered in the cam which gives uneven rotation and helps the toy perform a move. Example for such a toy is a clown who is hiding and showing his head from a box.

Sometimes the toy creators combine several different cams into a single toy which can lead to quite rich and complex performance. These more complex ones are usually called crank toys due to the way they are powered.

Other toys
Some mechanical toys are powered by various gravity forces. For example there are cars which are powered by giving only initial power and then using the gravitation to roll the wheels.

The outdoor spring toys are also entirely mechanical - little kids love them and that is great, because these toys are for riding. They encourage the kids to spend more time outdoor and to perform physical activity.

Depending on the material they are made of, the retro toys are mostly wooden and tin. This is different than the most modern toys which nowadays are made of plastic.

The mechanical toys are educative, use no batteries, live long and look great. There is no reason to replace them with radio-controlled electric toys which can never be so charming.

Fun Winter Toys

When I was young, I couldn't wait for winter! It never really mattered how cold it was outside, I just wanted to play in the snow. Whether it was sledding, tobogganing, building a snowman or having a snowball fight with the other kids, I just wanted to be outside!

If you have fond memories like I do of playing in the snow when you were younger, you want your children to experience this same fun. Heavy duty with hand grips, this inflatable snow sled will have you and your children flying down the hills. Cost is less than $20.

How about a winter toy that does double duty as a summer toy also? Almost two toys for the price of one - now that's smart shopping. The Ski Storm inflatable Jet Ski is a great ride-on sled for a kid that does double duty as a pool toy in the summer. This toy is made quite well of durable vinyl and patented Weathertek for year-round fun and priced less than $25.

Are your kids ready to try a snow board, but you're not ready for them to do so? The inflatable rocket ranger snow board is a great way for them to learn how to snow board. This snow board is made of sturdy vinyl with 2 built on boot straps, can hold up to 120 pounds and is recommended for kids 6 - 12 years old. With a price tag less than $10, this is a great way to determine if snow boarding is really what your children want to do.

Don't forget the accessories that make your life easier - and safer. Snowboarders should wear protective gear such as helmets and today's air pumps are affordable and won't leave you gasping for air. Outdoor toys that are affordable but fun are the way to go this winter season.

To make child acquainted with the things, the toys play an important role.

Educational toys always play an important role for letting the child to learn things. A child is blank and from the medium of toys he starts understanding things. In his early childhood, toys are his best friend as they keep surrounding him for most part of the day. So imparting education through educational toys is a novel idea. Especially, features like the rotors of helicopters or the gliding of a glider are lifelike. Toys, improving learning and language support

Language improvement Toys

The work of a baby toddler, preschooler or playing games. Although it is the ability of children to play, do not realize it at the time that the development of motor skills, logic and reasoning skills and language development, have fun. Parents naturally want their children to do some learning areas with toys that stimulate all, and then. What toys work best to improve your child's languageSkills, and at what age are developmentally appropriate?

Important choice

Toys for children focus on supporting and hearing your child's senses of vision. Although children are preverbal, they will sound and are wired for language, so any suggestion will help in this age the child develops into a baby, to explore the language is used. Reading and discussion with your child's books and toys will help you paceand intonation of speech, and a solid base on which they can develop language skills.

Toddlers and preschoolers aged children

Young children seem to learn something new every day. Language acquisition often "clicks" - one day your child can say a few words, and overnight he gains more and more. The first words are provided in order for the objects of everyday life, such as the "ball", "cup" and other words of material objects.

Toys that helpchildren develop language skills are those that undertake more than one of their senses. One can see from this letter puzzles or blocks with letters on them great opportunities for the provision of a child the opportunity to actual hands-on learning. Children's Ride on Toys Now and Then

Ride on toys gained popularity in the 1950's and 1960's and became favorites for many children growing up during this time. Classic riding toys were made of wood or metal, many times from very sturdy materials such as steel. The ride on toys of this era resembled the latest automobiles and airplanes, and there were always wagons and tricycles.

The original ride on toys were made of much more durable materials than the ride on toys of today, although some of the materials such as steel also meant that the toys were not as safe as the ones made today. Sometimes classic ride on toys also contained lead paint, which was not identified as a hazard until years later. Even though antiques ride on toys didn't have all the safety features of the ones today, they can still make great presents with a new finish.

Many craftsmen specialize in repairing and restoring antique ride on toys and restore them so that they are safe for use. If you are a handy person, you can also find antique toys at auctions, yard sales, and vintage shops that you can restore yourself. Some crafters make new ride on toys that resemble older models and are made of similar high quality materials such as wood. This is a good way to get a classic ride on toy that you know is safe and durable. Artisans will sell their classic riding toys at craft shows, vintage toy shops, and online. If you want your child or grandchild to experience the fun of a classic riding toy, you can either get them a restored antique or a new ride on toy that resembles the ones from your childhood.

Whether you buy a restored antique ride on toy or a newly manufactured one, make sure that they meet current safety requirements. Toys should not contain lead paint, which is usually not a problem for toys that are newly manufactured or for antiques that have been refurbished. Some of the most durable materials used in antique ride on toys such as steel, are not the safest materials and have been replaced by lightweight yet durable metals. Most modern ride on toys and refurbished classic toys have rubber pedals for a non slip finish as well as non slip rubber tires. Padded seats and non toxic paints are also safety features of new and refurbished ride on toys.

Ride on toys whether they are antiques or modern replicas make great gifts for young children. Most children love ride on toys and will have hours of fun riding, pretending, and letting their imaginations soar. There are many different ride on toy designs, from cars and trucks to airplanes and even boats. Some ride on toys have pedals and others are just scooted along by the child's feet. You should consider the age and ability of the child you are buying for when you decide which type on ride on toy is right for them. The History of Toys Over Time

Toys sure have came a long way since the first doll made literally thousands of years ago in ancient Egyptian times. Imagine this, the first doll was made with basic fabrics and paper pulled together with some string! Nowadays we have complex toys made of plastics, alloys, rubbers, and so many other materials too many to mention. But not only have the materials advanced, now toys can transform, move on their own, and even speak!

Let's look back at some of the original toys back in ancient times. The first doll was made somewhere around 2000 B.C. Sure, try to hand a child a paper doll in these times. They probably wouldn't appreciate it like children back then would. With so much time and effort it must have taken to make these by hand I'm sure they would love to play with those paper dolls. Other than the doll there was kites and yo-yo's and real basic board games that resemble our modern day chess.

Now we're going to skip ahead a few thousand years into a more recent period. Not many more toys where invented until the 1800's. Within such a small span of time so many toys became popular such as stuffed animals, toys cars, and even speaking dolls! Did you know the first talking doll was made almost two hundred years ago? Alphabet blocks also became a popular learning toy during this time.

On to the 1900's now. Pretty much by now every toy has been made at this point. But the 1900's is when all the major technological advances started coming to life. Early in the century there where battery operated toys, Legos, balloons, the View Master, and of course I can't forget Barbie, probably them epitome of all girl's dolls and toys in general. The stuffed bear became popular during this after being name the Teddy Bear after one of our presidents Sir Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt.

OK let's bring it back recent times now. The only one thing left to do now really do now is to make the toys even better by implementing some real technology into the toys. Toys that walk on their own, toys that can talk back to you?! OLD NEWS! Try motion sensory technology, voice activated, and terrain adaptable toys. Ancient Egyptians would be scared of some of these toys we have invented nowadays. Yes, toys have advanced quite a lot over the years, and remember in their own time they were always fun to play with as toy were meant to be. Fun.
